Nature-Inspired, Environmental Art

My Solo Show at Anna Bier Art Gallery

For my solo exhibition at Anna Bier Art Gallery, “The New Abnormal,” I created nature-inspired environmental art that focused on the rarity of untouched, unspoiled nature and themes of homesteading. It was a great opportunity and experience. I’m thankful for the Darke County Center for the Arts for selecting me to be one of their featured artists and for all of the support they offered along the way including a newspaper interview and promoting my show on the radio

When I applied to be a solo exhibiting artist at Anna Bier, it was a good challenge for me to start formally focusing on a new series. While themes of nature have always been a big part of my art, this body of work has sparked something deeper to continually mull over. Read on to see my full artist statement and more background info that contributed to the show.

Artist Statement

In “The New Abnormal” series, I draw attention to the shift in our relationship with nature and the environment. This work is inspired by my family’s homesteading journey, where we are pursuing a more self-sufficient lifestyle by growing a garden and orchard, raising chickens, keeping bees, and learning how to forage. I capture the beauty of nature amidst the chaos of modern practices that contribute to pollution and overdevelopment. It reflects the contrast between our current consumer-driven culture and the pressing issues of global warming, declining wildlife, and food security. “The New Abnormal” encourages self-reliance in place of broken systems and underscores the rarity of untouched, unspoiled nature.

Cassie Dunmyer solo exhibition at Anna Bier Gallery in St. Clair Memorial Hall downtown Greenville, Ohio. Darke County Center for the Arts

My earlier artistic endeavors delved into the intricacies of identity, exploring the interconnected components that contribute to one’s sense of self. Over time, this exploration transitioned into themes of morality and the pursuit of a self-sufficient lifestyle. My upbringing in a log home, surrounded by the natural beauty of woods and fields, has inspired my imagery and material choices through much of my work. Fungi, in particular, have served as a symbol, representing what comes to fruition through life experiences. Concurrently, my nature-based imagery has shifted from a broad spectrum to more intimate depictions of my homestead and the Midwest landscape. Through the deliberate use of surrealism and juxtaposition, my art seeks to not only provoke thought but also foster meaningful discussions on the interconnectedness of humanity and nature.

I’m located in Parker City, Indiana, where I live with my husband and two sons. I hold a BFA in drawing from Ball State University (2014). My artistic focus has evolved to primarily feature acrylic painting on wood panels and canvas, though I also work with paper and various media like colored pencil, ink, watercolor, gesso, and graphite. These media are sometimes layered over acrylic or combined in different ways. My process frequently involves using reference photos I have taken. I’ve been a professional photographer since 2017, transitioning from weddings and portraiture to fine art nature photography.

My transition from artist to wedding photographer and back to fine art was largely triggered by the events of 2020. My husband and I had already started homesteading, but supply chain failures and food insecurity around the country heightened our commitment to it. Spending more time at home, where we’ve let nature reclaim much of our property, brought solace. I’m inspired to share the values of homesteading and nature preservation, which I believe are vital for our world today and for future generations.

Putting the Show Together

Themes from the natural world

As I decided which pieces to include in my show, I wanted to give viewers a sense of place. I wanted the audience to see my artistic range as well as progression. Because I was largely inspired by my family’s homesteading journey, all of the photographs included were subjects from our homestead that are edible in some form. My newer works created with “The New Abnormal” in mind varied between celebrating the beauty of nature and its corruption.

Older works, including from my series “Fungus Garden,” were nature-inspired, environmental art that new meaning could be drawn from in context of “The New Abnormal.”

A Special Thank You

I’m thankful to the board for Darke County Center for the Arts for choosing me as one of their exhibiting artists. The Director of Visual Arts, Jennifer Overholser, was wonderful to work with throughout. I think the way she chose to hang the show was well grouped, by pairing pieces from my earlier series together from “Fungus Garden” and then moving into my new body of work. I appreciated her promotion of “The New Abnormal” on the radio. One of her interviews is linked below. I was also interviewed by Marilyn Delk, who captured an incredible depth of detail about my work. Her article is linked below as well.

More Inspiration from Nature and Homesteading

While some pieces have sold and are now in new homes, there’s still available artwork from “The New Abnormal” at my studio in Muncie. I plan on submitting some pieces to upcoming exhibitions, but if there is something you’re specifically interested in, you can visit my artwork page for pricing and availability.

Where does the series go from here? I’m continuing to create nature-inspired environmental art that draws from my experiences homesteading. I’m creating more paintings, drawings, and photography while experimenting with new materials. I keep finding inspiration in things like an abandoned farm house in the center of a field or learning the average number of miles produce travels is around 1500 miles. It seems like everywhere I turn, there’s more to consider and reflect upon then create art in response to it.

Two Regional Juried Indiana Art Shows

I’m excited to announce I’m an exhibiting artist at two regional juried art shows, Open Space: Art About the Land and RAM’s 125th Annual Exhibition by Indiana and Ohio Artists. Both shows are on display November through January.

Open Space: Art About the Land exhibition

Both “Dissent”and “To A Flame” were selected by juror Walt Bistline for this year’s Open Space: Art About the Land exhibition. Created in partnership with Red-Tail Land Conservancy, Open Space encourages Indiana artists to derive creative inspiration from the land around us. A portion of the proceeds benefit Red-tail Land Conservancy and their work to protect wildlife habitats, restore ecosystems to health, and provide the community with ways to connect with nature.

Open Space Art About the Land Opening
We made it to the Open Space Art About the Land reception as a new family of four!

My artwork will be on exhibit at the Anderson Museum of Art (AMOA) November 3rd – January 6th. The show will not be traveling this year which means my artwork will stay at AMOA for the entirety of the exhibition. The show has been split roughly in half, with work displaying simultaneously at AMOA and Minnetrista. Members at either organization, AMOA or Minnetrista, will have free admission to see both portions of the exhibition.

RAM’s 125th Annual Exhibition by Indiana and Ohio Artists

Jurors Greg Hull and Carol Ann Carter selected “The Last Little House on the Prairie” for RAM’s 125th Annual Exhibition by Indiana and Ohio Artists. I was very excited to have work selected for both shows, but particularly this one as it’s my first time displaying at the Richmond Museum of Art (RAM).

The show is open to the public November 9, 2023 through January 6, 2024 at RAM in Richmond, Indiana.

Solo Exhibition at Anna Bier Gallery

Once the shows come down, the work will then travel to the Anna Bier Gallery in Greenville, Ohio for my first solo gallery show, “The New Abnormal.” Artwork will be on display and available for purchase January 20th through February 24th. The exhibit is open to the public Saturdays from 11am – 1pm.

The closing reception is February 24th at 5:30pm and coincides with Lee Rocker of The Stray Cats performing in the adjoining auditorium in St. Clair Memorial Hall. I will be available to talk about the artwork until the concert begins at 7pm and again during intermission.

To hear more about the show, you can listen to this interview with Jennifer Overholser, the Director of Visual Arts for DCCA/Anna Bier Gallery, on WTGR 97.5. She talks about her new position, the local arts community, and gives a lot of great information about my upcoming solo show, “The New Abnormal.”

"The Last Little House on the Prairie"

A new Homesteading Painting

I just finished another painting for my new series focused on homesteading and the negative impact of cultural norms on the environment. “The Last Little House on the Prairie” is one of my most detailed and favorite acrylic paintings to date.

Experimenting and challenging myself

Drawing of Neighborhood in progress graphite on canvas Cassie Dunmyer Creative Muncie Indiana

While I took breaks and wasn’t consistently able to make progress on it, the drawing phase began in March. The time, attention to detail, and thought put in has led to finishing one of my favorite paintings I’ve made. I also created smaller pieces here and there and focused on other work needed in my studio. However, this homesteading painting has taken a lot of my focus. And now, I’m doing all the happy dances that it’s ready to be framed and then submitted to a regional show.

Throughout creating this piece, I was challenged by the technical aspects and my own experimentation. I hadn’t made anything involving exact measurement and perspective in years. There’s a point where I was calculating exact percentages to perfectly scale the houses in space. Then, there came the point where I did my best to just eyeball it. The strings I had pinned to the wall and tape helped me to at least keep consistent angles toward the horizon line.

Underpainting Acrylic Painting neighborhood homestead Cassie Dunmyer Creative Muncie Indiana

While I can easily point out what isn’t technically right in the painting, I feel like its looseness amidst the preciseness is one of the things I enjoy about it. I don’t normally create underpaintings of various colors in my work. I tend to gravitate toward building the exact colors I plan to use. Here, I wanted tiny bits of unnatural color to peek through the scene. This also added to a painterly quality that I was going for. However, I chose to not use these unnatural colors in the plants on the homestead. I also depicted only plants that are useful, produce something edible, and would be in season at the same time.

Homesteading inspiration and thoughts behind the painting

To be honest, I still haven’t read the books or watched much of the TV show. Maybe it isn’t the best title considering. But, I hear so often how Laura Ingalls Wilder’s stories inspired people to homestead.

Sometimes I think about what everything looked like before it was developed. As a Midwesterner, I imagine sprawling prairies and woods where subdivisions and intersections are now the landscape. One of our biggest monocrops is now grass that not only harms the biodiversity of our environment, but increases pollution and water waste. And if it doesn’t look perfect? Well, you can even paint that grass the “perfect” “natural” shade of green with sprays.

Meanwhile, it’s become a special interest hobby to grow your own food. Our yards are more often ornaments than habitats for life and provision. Because, within the last 100 years, the general population has traded an anesthetic and convenience for healthy longevity and sustainability. Where it was once more common to have a garden and raise small livestock than not, we now have restrictive HOA’s that ban such efforts for self reliance. You can find countless articles guiding you on how to hide food and functional plants in your landscaping so as to not upset your neighborhood.

So, I imagine this as the last little homestead in a sea of tract houses subscribing to HOA ordinances. Shining as an example of what could be.

Two Roots Homestead

Where We Began

My husband Justin and I’s homesteading dream began when we were students at Ball State. We craved a sense of freedom and living closer to nature. What’s unfolded since has included a habit of buying fixer uppers, killing a lot of plants, and diving into the next project.

While I grew up in the country, neither of us had experience farming or homesteading prior. Our parents had small gardens, but we didn’t start growing our own until we had our first house in 2014. Steadily we’ve gotten better, and the gardens get a little bigger each year.

Renovating and Growing a Homestead

We moved to our 11.5 acre homestead in 2018 and have been rebuilding it from the ground up since. We’ve taken most of the rooms in our house down to the studs, renovating the bulk of it ourselves. Meanwhile we’ve continued to grow a garden, plant fruit trees, raise chickens and begin beekeeping. Because it takes a lot of tools and equipment to do the work, Justin has also taught himself how to maintain and repair all of it as we go. Our son, Patrick, was about a year and a half old when we moved. While he’s usually more interested in playing than working, he’s been gradually learning alongside us.

Midwest Muncie Indiana Artist Painter Homesteader Cassie Dunmyer Creative

Going Wild

From the beginning, we’ve allowed much of our property to go wild. Much of the land was mowed when it was for sale. Now, we only mow a smaller section of yard, around our garden spaces, and trails. At one point in our journey, we discovered a large swath of garden area had bricks about 1-2 feet underneath. We searched for aerial photos of our to figure out where they came from and ended. We were able to find photos dating back to 1956, taken every couple years with some gaps in between. What we saw was a steady decline of trees and increasing development. One of our goals is to see a gradual increase of trees and sustainable habitat for wildlife as time goes on.

Improving and Expanding

Looking ahead, we want to continue improving and expanding our current homesteading ventures while pursuing new ones. We’re learning more about food preservation, permaculture practices, and building a more self-sufficient homestead. We would love to expand our small pond, begin worm composting, and keep trying new things.

Pursuing Self-sufficiency

2022 was the first year we were able to eat meals made entirely from our homestead at least a couple times a week while supplementing the rest of our meals with garden produce. The quality of food and feeling of accomplishment that comes with that isn’t comparable. While we know this lifestyle isn’t for everyone, we’ve learned that so much is still possible regardless of where you’re planted. The road to self-sufficiency isn’t one clear-cut path, but it’s an individual path worth taking.

If you’d like to follow along with what we’re up to around the homestead, you can find us on Instagram @tworootshomestead.

A New Art Studio in Muncie

A blank slate for new possibilities.

Today I signed the lease for my art new studio space in downtown Muncie!

I’ve thought about getting a studio on and off over the years, but never pulled the trigger. When it came up again, I said I’d sleep on it. But I couldn’t sleep because I was too excited. So I finally did it. I’ll have a dedicated space of my own where I can spread out my artwork, have open studio hours, and allow my practice to grow.

Our first house after graduating from Ball State had a decent amount of room for me to draw and paint. But after moving a couple times and having a kid, it got really cramped. When we moved to our homestead, we started renovating right away. Having a wood panel out on an easel or a drafting table set up undisturbed wasn’t realistic.

When I primarily ran my photography business though, it was easy enough to set up my desktop and safely store my camera gear. I was able to work everywhere from our kitchen counter, to the dining room, and even a small corner of our shared office.

Recently I’ve been working on 2’x3’ acrylic paintings and it’s been even more cramped. It’s hard to step back fully in our little spare bedroom turned office. I finally decided to get a studio space so that I could allow more room for my art practice. Someday my studio may come back home. We’re starting another round of renovations with hopes of expanding our work space. But until then, I’m excited to take this opportunity and pour into art in a way I haven’t felt able to for a long time.

My studio will be in the Murray Building, where my husband, Justin, had his first office spaces back in college. It feels very nostalgic and full circle to be here. But, I get the benefit of the Caffeinery downstairs now and even more artists as neighbors!

I got the keys this week and will start with a fresh coat of paint before the full move in. So, stay tuned for updates!

The Inspiration

I started spring of 2020 with sketches. While art has been a part of my life since I was young, it was on the backburner while I was running my photography business.

Originally, the fungus was meant to grow from the same log to symbolize our collective experience and growth from living through a pandemic. I’ve used fungus as a visual metaphor before, and this was a natural choice for me to create something new. But as events unfolded, I broke the composition into opposing sides. I gradually added glasslike shards to signify polarization of beliefs and politics.

The major change to the painting came from the tumultuous news cycle, but also personal experiences.  It was nerve-wracking photographing weddings during an evolving pandemic. My first wedding back included the father of the bride (a doctor) getting within six inches of my face telling me Black Lives Matter was a stupid movement and that everyone I loved would get Covid-19. I walked away from more than one event shaken. Like clockwork, I was notified a couple days after most weddings that I was exposed to someone infected with the virus. Then I’d have to drop everything to get tested before the following event. Painting this was a cathartic, meditative way to cope and get back into making art.

The Song

At the beginning of 2020, I found the song “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” by The Wombats. While the actual meaning of the lyrics doesn’t align with the one I assigned to it, it became like an anthem every time I was working. I imagined it playing while crowds of wedding guests gradually took off their masks (or never had them on at all) having fun on the dancefloor. It felt like everyone was taking a sigh of relief having the opportunity to gather again and live “normally” for a night. Divisions were set aside in celebration of the couples getting married. The portions of the song that struck me most in this context were:

“Let’s dance to Joy Division
And celebrate the irony
Everything is going wrong
But we’re so happy
Let’s dance to Joy Division
And raise our glass to the ceiling
‘Cause this could all go so wrong
But we’re so happy
Yeah, we’re so happy”

And later –
“So, let the love tear us apart
I found the cure for a broken heart
Let it tear us apart, let it tear us apart, let it tear us apart”

I’ve picked up and put down this painting countless times since starting. The meaning for me now is that while the political climate we find ourselves in divides, it’s important to acknowledge we’re all products of unique situations. We’re all growing in some way from this collective experience. I hope we can simultaneously hold personal beliefs while respecting an opposing side. May joy gradually win over division.
